Disclosure: This page is written by The TaskFire Team. We make TaskFire, one of the two apps compared here, so we have an obvious interest. We’ve tried to be fair: competitor facts come from the competitor’s own website or help pages, each with a source link below, and we say plainly where Things 3 is the better choice. Prices are in US dollars and were checked in October 2026.

The short answer

Things 3 is the better choice if you only use Apple devices, work alone and prefer to pay once instead of subscribing. It’s beautifully designed and has won two Apple Design Awards. TaskFire is the better choice if you need your tasks in a web browser (say, on a work PC) or want to share lists and assign tasks to family or coworkers, which Things doesn’t support. Neither app runs on Android.

Pricing

Things 3 is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and it’s sold separately for each type of device: in the US App Store it’s $49.99 for Mac, $19.99 for iPad and $9.99 for iPhone, or $79.97 for all three. The Apple Watch app comes with the iPhone app, and Things Cloud sync is free. There’s no free plan, no bundle and no discount, though it supports Apple Family Sharing, and Cultured Code offers a free 15-day trial of the Mac app.

TaskFire has a free Basic plan with tasks, checklists, reminders, notes, comments and free syncing, capped at 50 active tasks and 3 active lists, with one reminder per task. Premium costs $2.99 a month or $30 a year (about $2.50 a month) and removes those limits. It adds tags, Smart Lists, recurring tasks, location alerts, Siri and Siri Shortcuts, list sharing, task assignment, adding tasks by email, Google Calendar and Slack integration, up to 10 reminders per task and 1 GB of attachment storage. Teams costs $4 per user per month (or $40 per user per year) and adds centralized billing, a team admin dashboard and priority support. New accounts get 14 days of Premium free, and you can cancel at any time.

Bottom line: if you’d use Things on Mac and iPhone for years, its one-time price can work out cheaper than any subscription. TaskFire costs less up front and has a free plan, but it’s an ongoing $30 a year for Premium.

Platforms

Things runs on Mac, iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro. Cultured Code says plainly that it does not work on Windows, Android, Linux or in a web browser.

TaskFire runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and the web, and one account syncs everything. TaskFire has no Android app and no native Windows app; on a Windows PC or Chromebook you’d use the web app. The key difference: TaskFire’s web app lets you reach your tasks from any computer, which Things can’t do.

Features

Things is known for its clean, fast design and has won two Apple Design Awards. You organize to-dos into Projects (with headings, notes and a deadline) and Areas for each part of your life, such as Work or Family. The Today and Upcoming lists show your to-dos next to your calendar events, and there’s a This Evening section for later in the day. To-dos can have notes (with Markdown), tags, checklists, reminders and repeat schedules. You can forward an email to create a to-do with Mail to Things, add tasks from anywhere with Quick Entry, and use Siri, widgets and Apple Shortcuts.

TaskFire is built around lists and Smart Lists, which are saved filters that pull tasks together from every list. New accounts start with ready-made Smart Lists such as Important (starred), Next seven days and Assigned to you, and you can copy and edit them. When you type a task, TaskFire reads symbols in the text to fill in fields: brackets for a start date, parentheses for a due date, exclamation marks for priority, # for tags and a dash for the list name. Tasks can have start and due dates, three priority levels, notes, comments, tags, checklists, and repeat patterns based on either the due date or the completion date. You can also forward an email to create a task, with the email body saved as the task’s notes.

Collaboration

This is the biggest practical difference. Cultured Code’s support page says Things does not support real-time sharing of to-dos or lists. Family Sharing lets relatives use the app you bought, but not share a list.

In TaskFire, Premium users can share lists with Free and Premium users, assign tasks to people, and comment on tasks, with optional email notifications for new comments. The built-in “Assigned to you” Smart List shows everything that’s been handed to you. The Teams plan adds centralized billing and an admin dashboard. You can also invite outside collaborators to your lists for free.
